A Tequila Sunrise without the Tequila

Some drinks are ordered for their taste. The Tequila Sunrise gets ordered for its colour. Watch someone pour one and you'll see why: the grenadine slips down through the orange juice and settles at the bottom like the last light over the Danube, and for a second everyone at the bar leans in. Here is my mildly heretical view. The tequila was never the main character in that cocktail. So when the creative team at HBO's Budapest office ordered our alcohol-free agave spirit to celebrate a premiere, I was curious what they would do with it. They did something clever.

The occasion was the third season of Euphoria. If you've watched the show, you know its look. Glitter under the eyes, rooms washed in violet and amber, light that seems mixed rather than switched on. The team wanted to thank their colleagues with something that matched that mood, and a speech was never going to do it. Neither was another round of office prosecco.

So they built a mocktail workshop around the Tequila Sunrise. Everyone made their own alcohol-free tequila mocktail. People layered the citrus, poured the grenadine slowly (or not slowly enough, the first time), and argued a little about garnish. The point was never the recipe. It was making something with your hands next to the people you spend your working week with.

Their creative team summed it up afterwards better than I could. The drinks were refreshing and bright to look at, and in their words "surprisingly close to the classic Tequila Sunrise flavour." That word, surprisingly, is the one I keep coming back to.

Why it worked without the alcohol

I've always said that of everything that makes a life happy, friendship matters most. I still think so. And I've noticed something about celebrations at work: drinking and eating is still part of the celebration, alcohol is avoided inside the office but the dynamics are kept.

How about the after work drinks with work mates? It loosens things, yes. But it also leaves people out. The colleague driving home, those who simply don't drink, anyone with an early call to an airport the next morning. It also affects some collegues by loosening their inhibitions way too much. Akward situations become a topic on the following week.

Imagine room where everyone holds the same glass, and nobody has to explain why...

The drink itself still has to hold up, of course. What makes Seven Giants Blanco work in a Sunrise is the same thing that makes a good dealcoholised wine work: it keeps the structure. The slightly green edge of agave gives the orange juice something to push against. Without it, a Sunrise is juice with a sunset in it. With the agave flavour, you have an adult drink.

Make one yourself

Fill a tall glass with ice and pour in about 10 cl of Seven Giants Blanco. Top it with fresh orange juice (better if fresh squeezed), around twice as much. Then let a spoonful of grenadine run down the inside of the glass and leave it alone. Don't stir. That is the whole trick, really.
