Laposa Birtok

Laposa Birtok is a family-run winery on Badacsony, one of the volcanic "witness hills" rising above Lake Balaton's northern shore. Founded in the early 1990s when Dr. József Laposa began acquiring the region's finest south-facing plots, the estate has grown into one of Badacsony's most respected wineries, now farming roughly 40 hectares across some of the appellation's best-known sites.

The vineyards sit on Badacsony's distinctive volcanic terroir: a base of ancient basalt and basalt tuff, overlaid in places by fine sand and clay deposited millennia ago by the Pannonian Sea, and by loess on the gentler slopes. Closer to the hilltops, weathered basalt scree dominates — soil that absorbs heat during the day and radiates it back at night, giving Badacsony's white wines their signature minerality, fuller body, and naturally high acidity. The lake itself moderates the climate, tempering extremes and creating a mild, sub-Mediterranean microclimate ideal for viticulture.

Laposa Birtok works almost exclusively with white grape varieties traditional to the region — Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Rajnai Rizling, Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris), Kéknyelű, and Furmint — producing around 600,000 bottles a year, from fresh, reductive everyday wines to long-aged, single-vineyard barrel selections. The winemaking philosophy favors complexity wrapped in lightness: wines that are true to their terroir and variety, but never showy or overworked.
